Job description

The Eindhoven University of Technology has a vacancy for: PhD student for low frequency electrodynamic effects for accuracy in high-tech actuators in the Electromechanics and Power Electronics (EPE) group, Department of Electrical Engineering. The Department of Electrical Engineering is one of the nine departments of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and provides BSc and MSc programs in Electrical Engineering. The department has nine research groups and has research collaborations with other departments at the Eindhoven University of Technology as well as with a large number of other universities and companies, both within The Netherlands and internationally. The department has approximately 300 employees and 600 students. The EPE group has a track record of developing dedicated design tools in close cooperation with industry. The PhD student will participate in an industrial research program and will collaborate intensely with the other members of the EPE group (around 40 researchers). The aim of his/her PhD research project is to research future proof electromagnetic dynamic models to improve the force prediction of electromagnetic actuators, where research within the EPE Group is characterized by personal supervision. Research challenge
T
he accuracy of electro-mechanical actuation systems is highly important in many high-precision applications. For example in semiconductor lithography, the required position accuracy of non-linear actuators is in the nanometre range over a stroke of one millimetre. Further in low cost applications the minimization of energy is paramount. To obtain both position accuracy and low cost (optimal energy conversion), the error of the force/power prediction of high-precision actuators must be small. As such, flux density variations will be mapped on averaged equations for the flux density flow. However, saturation influences the Maxwell stress tensor which will need to be researched. This necessitates a further enhancement of the iterative approach including the summation of multiple charge surfaces or volumes. On lab-scale soft-magnetic geometries validations will be performed to match the flux tube behavior with in-house experiments.
“Low frequency electrodynamic effects for accuracy”
Dense flux density flows have been the subject of intense research over the past decades, owing to their wealth of scientifically interesting phenomena, as well as its direct relevance for innumerable industrial applications. Saturated flux density flows are always encountered in all industrially important electrical to mechanical energy conversion devices. At present, the validation of devices involving soft magnetic materials with non-linear characteristics is still a fully finite element based process. The research objective is to pioneer a multi-scale analytic methodology, based on charge modelling, for non-linear characteristics of soft magnetic structures. To date, analytic models mostly assume soft magnetic material infinitely permeable because this linearizes the treatment of flux density and boundary conditions. However, all soft magnetic materials in electrical machines are non-linear. This means that anisotropic saturation needs accounting for. Such electromagnetic structure variations are complex and many of the fundamental problems linked to flux tube orientation and boundary proximity appear and limit their application. This work will not only significantly advance our scientific understanding of saturation of soft magnetic materials, but also be extremely relevant to industrially important optimal energy conversion within high tech systems.

Job requirements
For this project, a candidate with MSc degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or Mathematics will be selected and hired as doctoral student in the Electromechanics and Power Electronics Group (https://www.tue.nl/epe) for a 4-years period. The candidate should have an excellent knowledge and background in magnetic field modelling, affiliation with high-tech applications and a strong mathematical background. The candidate will closely cooperate with the other persons involved in the project. Previous experience with the design of non-linear electromagnetic modelling including the use of FE tools, is a must. Your CV must include a complete list of the marks obtained during your whole university career.

Challenging PhD position in Power Electronics at TUE

Job description
Eindhoven University of Technology has a vacancy for: PhD student for highly accurate power amplifiers for high precision motion control, in the Electromechanics and Power Electronics (EPE) group, Department of Electrical Engineering.
The EPE group has a track record of research in the fields of electromechanics and power electronics in close cooperation with industry. The PhD student will participate in an industrial research program and will collaborate intensively with the other members of the EPE group (around 40 researchers). The aim of his/her PhD research project is to research future proof amplifiers that are characterized by highly linear behaviour. Research within the EPE Group is characterized by personal supervision.
Research challenge
The accuracy of power amplifiers is highly important in many high-precision applications. In for example the semiconductor lithography industry, the bandwidth and power output requirements are estimated to increase drastically over the coming years. To reach these goals, adhering to strict accuracy requirements as well, it is essential to consider both power electronic topologies and their control simultaneously. Both a higher power level and bandwidth can be obtained by using more complex power electronics configurations, such as multilevel and/or multicell topologies. Using multiple output levels not only results in reduced output filtering requirements and therefore a higher bandwidth, but also increases the output current accuracy, while the cascading or paralleling of cells yields a larger output power. Multilevel/-cell converters contain many switches and internal states, making them MIMO systems. Control approaches that are suited for controlling these states by simultaneously driving multiple gates are a therefore a necessary component of such power converters. For example Model Predictive Control can be used, which is able to deal with multiple inputs and outputs while taking into account the constraints of the converter, improving the dynamic response of the converter.
“Next generation ultrahigh precision power amplifiers”
In order to realise an amplifier with a high bandwidth and high output power, (new) multicell and multilevel topologies are likely required. Currently, research into these types of converters is focussed on distribution grid-type properties, such as a total harmonic distortion of a few percent, while for this application a much higher accuracy is needed. This research will focus much more on innovative use of comparable topologies for high precision applications. Furthermore, a simple transfer function of the closed loop controlled amplifier system is required for feedforward of amplifier dynamics. Therefore it is important to research topologies that offer a high degree of linearity. Combining a high performance multilevel or multicell topology with the necessary control, an amplifier system can be realised that exhibits very predictable behaviour, and has a simplified transfer function when observed from the motion control perspective.
Job requirements
For this project, a candidate with an MSc degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or Mathematics will be considered and hired as doctoral student in the Electromechanics and Power Electronics Group (https://www.tue.nl/epe) for a period of four years. Job description
NeMeCo - Near-Memory Computing – the Key to Power-Efficient Exascale Computing Systems.
One of the key challenges in designing new generations of HPC systems that can keep up with the ever-growing data volumes, is that current technological trends prevent large amounts of data to be transferred at acceptable power dissipation costs. Reducing expensive data transfers by “bringing computation closer to the data”, also known as near-memory computing, has emerged as a very promising solution to address this scaling issue in HPC systems in order to realize the Exascale computing systems that are required for handling future (Big-data) workloads. Near-memory computing, however, is still in its infancy, and many challenges have to be addressed before it can be established as an integral component of HPC systems.
NeMeCo is an ambitious Marie Sk³odowska-Curie European Industrial Doctorates (EID) Innovative Training Network (ITN) programme, which takes up several of the above challenges. NeMeCo involves a three-partner network comprising the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, IBM Research GmbH in Switzerland, and the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy, ASTRON. These partners provide a unique combination of academic and industrial expertise of Big-data applications, compilers, memory and processor technology, and high-performance computer architecture. NeMeCo offers early stage researchers (ESRs) an excellent multidisciplinary training program at the cross roads of hardware and software design, where complex trade-offs have to be made between performance, programmability and energy efficiency. A board of 8 experienced supervisors will work together across disciplines and sectors to train and mentor the ESRs who will have access to superb research facilities at all locations.
Description
A total of three individual PhD projects are available
ESR1: Run-time optimization
ESR2: Compiler technology
ESR3: Near-memory processor design
These three projects complement each other to cover the wide spectrum of aspects related to the following research objectives that build upon each other:

  1. Analysis of Big data workloads, their key algorithms, their complexity in terms of memory, compute and I/O operations, their data locality, their parallelization potential, their mappings to various platforms, possible algorithmic optimizations, etc. The purpose is to obtain a detailed understanding of their characteristics, and their static and dynamic processing requirements (ESR1+2+3).
  2. Modelling of selected Big data workloads, modelling of conventional computer architectures and of potential novel architectures based on near-memory computing, and modelling of the mapping of the workloads on those architectures. Objective is to enable a huge design space exploration, but still with sufficient detail based on accurate predictions of power consumption and performance (ESR1+2+3).
  3. Development of techniques for partitioning, mapping, and compiling Big data workloads on a hybrid HPC system combining conventional processing elements with near-memory computing capabilities (ESR2). Development of techniques for run-time optimization of the performance and power consumption (ESR1). Development of a system-level and accelerator level architecture for a near-memory computing device integrated into a hybrid HPC system (ESR3).
  4. Realization of a near-memory computing tool set and ecosystem including compiler, debugger, performance analysis, and run-time optimization tools (ESR1+2), and a near-memory computing device implementation in a hardware description language (ESR3).
  5. Translation of the expertise, models, tools and architecture, into a small-scale demonstrator of a computing system supporting near-memory computing (ESR1+2+3). This demonstrator will be integrated into an emerging ecosystem for HPC technologies, which increases the commercial relevance of the developed near-memory computing tool set and architecture while, at the same time, allowing evaluation of its application to a wide range of real-world problems. The latter is a key element of the proposed cutting-edge research program and will be instrumental for realizing break-through innovations.
